Differences in Education between Chinese and Americans

     As is known to us all, China, as well as the United States, is one of the most productive countries in the world. Chinese are famous for producing nice goods while Americans are famous for producing novel ideas. Both make them are economically superior to most countries in the world. Strong as China is, there are still quite a lot of problems in our country. For example, every time I search for the people with Nobel Prize, I will feel a little jauntiness for my country. With so many people in China, it’s not easy to convince me that the Chinese people have gotten only one Nobel Prize. The four great inventions of ancient China and an increasing number of foreign scholars of Chinese origin with Nobel Prizes has constantly proved to me that the Chinese are absolutely not inferior to Americans in intelligence. Incomprehensive as Nobel Prize may be, it can still inform us of some of our problems. So do we Chinese have the capability to winhe prize? What’s wrong with Chinese? The answer lies in our education.     On the one hand, the educational problem exists in the prevailing teaching methods. Chinese teachers take it for granted that they are the authorities at any time even when they are obviously wrong. Any activities attempting to challenge them will be finally met with sarcasm and criticism. Feeling frustrated and hurt, students with creative ideas will hardly continue to rebut teachers, which works as a grinder to gradually decrease students’ enthusiasm towards self-

studying and eventually drives students away from the spirit of exploration, both of which are essential factors to achievements. As far as I know, American teachers enjoy discussing with students and they consider the querying process to be of mutual progress rather than intentional aggression. Students also learn far more than only an answer. They know why they are wrong and how to correct the mistakes. Besides, the relationship between teachers and students becomes closer and closer, which does good to further teaching.     

On the other hand, the educational system of “one test decides the whole life” in China needs improving. There is no question that the college entrance examination is at present the most fair selection for talents, but what’s behind the fairness? What’s going on after the exam? Students feel too relaxed to pick up studying again and they spend every day on computers, love affairs, and dinners without realizing that to make the most of college is the key to smoothly stepping into the society. America also has a similar exam called SAT. But less significance is attached to this exam. It is college that gives American students a wider platform for further studying and college students are mature enough to understand the importance of explorative study. So American college students are, in general, much more hardworking than Chinese college students, which is why Chinese colleges seldom occupy one tiny space in the international top college groups.     

      To promote the status of Chinese education, reform in both teaching methods and the college institution is badly needed. For one thing, teachers’ attitudes towards students’ questions can be transformed by ideological instruction. For another, we should model after the American educational system to better our education.
